Allopathic Vs Functional/Integrative Medicine
Allopathic medicine or conventional Western Medicine (WM) – labels and treats symptoms of diseases with medications, radiation, and surgery. It’s major strengths are handling emergency situations and some surgeries. Here in the USA, we have some of the best trauma centers in the world. It’s major weakness is that it doesn’t seek to understand and treat the underlying causes of disease and throws man made medicines to treat the symptoms of disease. Many times these medicines cause their own set of side effects and the new side effects from the medications need medications to deal with the medication’s side effects. A viscous cycle develops where more and more toxic chemicals in continuously introduced into our bodies. Not good! Since allopathic medicine is treating the symptoms of diseases and no “cures” are being introduced, disease continues on and on, and new diseases develop from the accumulation of toxins in our bodies – slowly damaging our liver, kidneys, digestive tract, lungs, cardio systems, etc. In addition, there is very minimal effort put into the prevention of disease. Most often, you wait until there are symptoms of disease and then you treat the symptoms. The problem with this is that disease starts many years before any symptoms become visible.
Functional Medicine (FM) looks at the underlying causes of the symptoms by gathering your medical history, listening to you regarding your conditions and treats the causes of the disease. Many causes of disease under this model are poor nutrition, stress, toxins, allergens, genetics, and your microbiome. Functional Medicine can often lead the patients to take control over their own health and with the guidance of the Functional Medicine doctor ensure the patients will manage their health in the long run.
Integrative Medicine (IM) combines treatments/practices of medicine not traditionally used in Western Medicine and combines them with Western Medicine practices. Common non-traditional practices include: Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Diet and dietary supplements, Massage, Sound therapy, and Meditation. IM is thought to include a full spectrum of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental factors that influence your health.
Naturopathic Medicine (NPM) premise it that the body will heal itself naturally by balancing a healthy lifestyle and use natural medicine treatments to help a person’s health. Naturopathic Doctors are medically trained primary care doctors that graduated from a 4 year naturopathic medical school, like Bastyr University. They can prescribe pharmaceutical medications if needed. Some times Naturopathic doctors treat the symptoms of diseases with holistic remedies and do not venture to discover the underlying causes of the disease.
There is a strong divide in allopathic medicine versus all other holistic medicine practices. Why this strong divide? There is no money for large corporations in several industries if actual cures for disease become common knowledge. After studying the differences between these practices and digging deeper on specific methodologies of treatments, I can assure that there are significant scientific studies in holistic medicine practices and that the media is blatantly dishonest about it.
